What Are The Types Of Construction Delays?

When you are having something built for you in Pennsylvania, one thing you never want to hear is that the project is delayed. Delays can happen on a construction site for many reasons. Understanding what can cause delays can help you to avoid issues with contractors in the future.

According to Plan Academy, construction delays often occur because of something beyond the contractors control. This could include bad weather or site issues. Trouble getting permits, labor disputes and interference by regulators can also lead to this type of delay. However, there are also times when the contractor could be held liable for a delay, such as is the case when the contractors fails to plan a project properly, does not show up on time or leaves the job early or hires unreliable subcontractors.

Delays obviously cause issues with the job being finished on time. Contractors often allow for certain delays, though, so if a delay will not cause a huge issue, then it is generally non-critical. However, if a delay starts to impact other areas of the project and is leading to issues with completing the job on time, then it is considered a critical error, and something should be done to remedy the situation as soon as possible.

When a delay occurs, someone will have to pay for it. In some cases, you may be liable to pay for costs incurred due the issues, but other times, the contractor is responsible. It is important to clearly define who is responsible for expenses when delays occur in your contract. This information is for education and is not legal advice.
